Cross-Functional Decision Making

Influence Challenge

A Simulation for Leaders Who Need to Influence and Align Stakeholders

Abilitie's Influence Challenge is a team-based simulation that gives leaders hands-on practice influencing without direct authority. Through a series of high-stakes conversations, participants identify the motivators and competing interests of the people around them, balance those against their own priorities, and build influence strategies that win support regardless of title or position.

Why It Matters

As "dotted-line" reporting and cross-functional work increase, unclear authority creates friction in everyday decision making. Influence Challenge builds the habits leaders need to navigate that conflict, hold their ground without escalating, and strengthen cross-functional teamwork.

Skills Participants Build:

  • checkmark

Explore stakeholder interests, power dynamics, and motivations to design effective influence strategies

  • checkmark

Create shared interests among disconnected or conflicting stakeholders

Over several decision cycles they learn to separate positions from interests, build relationships deliberately, and discover that most decisions can be reached by more than one route.

Participants face scenarios such as:

    Gaining support from skeptical colleagues

  • checkmark

Influencing peers across functions with competing priorities

  • checkmark

    Navigating emotionally charged conversations

Getting a group of roughly 40 midlevel associates to close their laptops, put their phone on silent, and be fully immersed in a half-day simulation on negotiation skills is no easy task, however, partnering with the Abilitie team and utilizing their Influence Challenge helped us do just that. Using both role play and AI, the Influence Challenge allowed associates to practice negotiating in a controlled environment, all while maintaining high levels of engagement and fun. The immediate feedback from associates was overwhelmingly positive and we look forward to utilizing the Influence Challenge again!

We really needed leaders, especially executive talent, to experience what it was like to run the business from a different point of view. We specifically put participants into roles that were out of their comfort zone, and the simulation really gave us the opportunity to expose them to unfamiliar challenges.
