Train the Trainer

Certify Your Internal Facilitators

Abilitie's Train the Trainer program is a certification that prepares your organization's own facilitators to deliver one of our award-winning simulations. It gives L&D teams a way to scale simulation-based leadership development across the business while keeping delivery in the hands of people who know the organization best. Certifying internal faculty is a proven way to scale while contextualizing the learning to your organization, and we've supported hundreds of facilitators across the globe.

What is the Train the Trainer Certification?

Train the Trainer is Abilitie's certification program for client facilitators. Instead of bringing in Abilitie faculty for every session, your organization certifies its own internal facilitators to deliver an Abilitie simulation, such as Management Challenge, Business Challenge, or Enterprise Challenge.

Becoming certified in Abilitie's simulations is a valuable investment for L&D professionals. Certification includes one-on-one coaching with a Principal Facilitator, with hands-on practice and guidance for both in-person and virtual facilitation.

Every Abilitie simulation is built on our curriculum in three timeless and universal business domains: business acumen, cross-functional decision making, and team management. Certified facilitators deliver that experience with the added advantage of knowing your organization, and programs can be custom-tailored to integrate your vision, mission, business metrics, and decision frameworks.

Is certification right for your organization?

Being an Abilitie certified facilitator is not for everyone. Our simulations are not simple exercises, and debriefing them cannot be learned by reading a script.

Certification is ideal for your organization when:

  • checkmark

A regular cadence of programs is expected, typically six or more programs per year

  • checkmark

Internal faculty expertise is in place to take Abilitie solutions forward

Ideal faculty are:

  • checkmark

Comfortable with technology and new tools

  • checkmark

Able to simplify complex simulation data

  • checkmark

    Skilled in flexible, Socratic-style debriefs

If your organization runs programs less often, or would rather keep delivery fully supported, our global network of 250+ Abilitie facilitators can deliver your programs for you.

How the certification process works

Abilitie's certification consists of four separate live sessions, each led by Principal Faculty, and can be applied to any of our simulations or programs. Between sessions, prospective facilitators prepare through self-study with comprehensive manuals, video demonstrations featuring Principal Facilitators, and hands-on practice within the simulation.

Live session (3 hours)

What happens

Self-study after

Week 1

Kickoff

Get oriented to the simulation with a short play session, then gain access to certification materials and a practice simulation environment

6 to 8 hours

Week 2

Simulation Mechanics

Get familiar with the technology and mechanics, then get answers to frequently asked questions

4 to 6 hours

Week 3

Debriefs and Content

Pair up to work through the simulation's core content

1 to 4 hours to prepare for Teachback

Week 4

Teachback

Deliver a portion of the experience to Principal Faculty and peers for feedback and certification completion

First delivery as a Certified Facilitator

We recommend a four-week certification schedule that takes place immediately before the first live delivery. Facilitators are most successful when their first delivery is scheduled as close as a day, or up to one week, after certification. Flexibility is key for learning, so the schedule can condense or expand to suit your needs.

For Case Challenges, certification is shorter: a two-hour Kickoff and Training session followed by a two-hour Teachback, with additional sessions available for larger cohorts.

Why organizations certify internal facilitators

For organizations running simulations at a regular cadence, certifying internal facilitators brings several advantages:

  • checkmark

Scale delivery on your own schedule: Certified facilitators can run programs whenever the business needs them on their own timeline.

  • checkmark

Contextualize the learning: Internal facilitators can connect simulation moments to your company's language, strategy, and day-to-day realities, answering the question every learner asks: "What does this look like here?"

  • checkmark

Deliver a consistent experience globally: Abilitie simulations are available in 8 languages and can be delivered in person or virtually, so certified teams can offer the same learning across regions.

  • checkmark

Build internal capability: Certification develops your L&D team's own facilitation skills, from managing simulation technology to leading team debriefs.

  • checkmark

Expand over time: Once certified on one simulation, facilitators can add related simulations through shorter extended certifications. For example, facilitators certified in Enterprise Challenge can also certify in Executive Summit with a single capability development session.

Ongoing support from Abilitie

Certification does not mean going at it alone. Certified facilitators continue to have access to the resources they used during certification, including facilitator manuals, video demonstrations, and their practice simulation environment, so they can return and prepare before each delivery.

Abilitie's platform is web-based and requires no downloads or integrations, and it meets enterprise-grade security standards, including AES-256 encryption at rest, TLS 1.3+ in transit, and SOC2 Type 2 compliance. Your Abilitie Client Experience Director stays involved to help schedule certifications, plan deliveries, and support your team as programs grow.
